Walking along the Westsong Walkway last week, we decided to explore a conservation area on the old Matson Lands. At the top of the land sit the Swallows Landing condominium development. The Matson Conservation Area is the last harbour-side endangered Garry oak ecosystem in Victoria. The stairway which hovers above it offers excellent views of not only the harbour, but the wonderful species which inhabit the land. Read more about it here.

We met this fellow on Dunsmuir Road near the entrance to Swallows Landing.

The sweet subtle signs of spring are literally in the air – we experienced the occasional scent of cherry blossoms on our long walk yesterday. Here are a few photos from in and around Beacon Hill Park, Victoria BC.

Lots of snowdrops and the green beginnings of many other spring flowers.

These daffodils are early. Another week of this weather and they will be in full force.

Snowdrops, right on time. (Not unusual for snowdrops in January, and they have been around for a few weeks now.)

Early rhododendrons, usually in their full bloom in March and April.

While I’m hoping for a rare west-coast January snowstorm, nature decides on snowdrops instead… Well, OK.

Last year's summer hydrangea weathered and muted by the autumn and winter, but still spectacular.

So many Pea Fowl. Not all the Cocks had their tail feathers fully grown, but they are still so beautiful.

Spent an afternoon recently at Vanity Fair on Fort Street. Cases and cases of extraordinary items to peruse. Hours of fun!

Lovely break from the rain yesterday and today with warmer temperatures and sunshine. Still a lot of wind, and the waves were stunning crashing, sometimes spraying over the causeway, near the breakwater on Dallas Drive. And then, with winter only one third done, the little snowdrops and crocuses poking up from their slumber. And only a week ago we had snow!

The snowdrops are my particular favourite!

Beautiful whitecaps rolling in.
