On our way to the walking tour yesterday we spied a house that was full-on ready for Hallowe’en, complete with giant blow-up black cat on the roof, its head moving back and forth. I guess when you live across the street from the graveyard…

Here are some images of the hand-cut stamp Hallowe’en cards I have in my Etsy shop:

Ravens, owls and bats for spooky Hallowe’en cards.

More spooky in a more simple card.

October 1 and another sunny autumn day begins. We’re having the most beautiful weather. Yesterday we went to Ross Bay Cemetery for a guided walking tour. The Old Cemeteries Society hosts tours every Sunday, usually at Ross Bay, but sometimes at other historic graveyards like Pioneer Square downtown. Yesterday’s tour coincided with the 150th Anniversary of the Incorporation of the City of Victoria Symposium. Several actors in period dress portrayed people of importance from 1862 who are buried at Ross Bay. The Society uses the funds it raises from memberships and tours for materials to upkeep the historic graveyards. This year, we were told, they were able to repaint all the wrought iron at the Ross Bay Cemetery. Their volunteers also do research, gravesite cataloguing and tombstone cleaning.

We have had a very warm September and it has definitely been a long extension to summer. But in the last week or so there has been a crispness in the air and a bit of colour in the leaves. Our walk this week produced these shots:

Our lovely Inner Harbour.

We were pleased to see that the bright orange plastic fencing that had adorned the left side of this path for most of the year had been removed. Beacon Hill Park, Victoria BC.

Brown, green, red and orange.

One orange leaf.

Lovely autumn evening for a walk a few nights ago. Sauntered around the harbour and through the garden at The Empress Hotel before treating ourselves to dessert at Clay Pigeon. Such fun!

Chocolate Spoon Bread; yummy.

I had The Fresa, prosecco and berry compote and GJ had a glass of just prosecco. Clay Pigeon has it on tap!

I love to see this: the public boulevard being used as vegetable garden. There is one example, very close to downtown, which we admire often. The gardener is usually out tending his creation when we pass. He’s very proud of the quality and flavour of his produce and loves to share the bounty with his neighbours. Proof that we certainly don’t need a lot of space to grow our own food; a little land can go a long way when approached thoughtfully and with passion.

Boulevard gardens are become more and more prevalent in our city. Hooray!

A favor to the neighbourhood school children who, when asked what the gardener should grow, without hesitation agreed “Pumpkin!”

Sunflowers of every size and colour.

These are fragrant beauties.

Lots of bees working their magic on the sunflowers.

The Fernwood neighbourhood is just on the outskirts of downtown Victoria. I had a work errand to run to the hospital so we decided to make it our walk outing for the day. Fernwood is an eclectic mix of homes with every decade represented from the last 120 years. The small Fernwood Square shopping area includes interesting shops and services as well as a variety of dining experiences from take out Caribbean fare to a pub to a wine bar. The beautiful Belfry Theatre is located here as well. This is a neighbourhood with a real feel of community. We sat out side and shared a stuffed Roti from Stir It Up and watched the evening bike commuters returning home and the sidewalk tables in front of the Cornerstone Cafe full.

A beautifully painted concrete fence with a glimpse of the new addition to Vic High in the background.

Almost all the electric polls are painted from the ground to about 6 feet up. Each is different and they add to the colour of the neighbourhood!

In a lovely garden along the walk.

Our stuffed roti was amazing!

We popped out to the last night market of the year after dinner yesterday evening. I’ve been trying to figure out what setting on my point and shoot works for night time shots, but I cannot seem to get a non-blurry photo. But that’s OK as it produced these blurry photos last night that kind of set the right mood!

Lots of people out for the market, eating and shopping.

So much going on in our pretty little neighbourhood! I love that so many people live in these old historic buildings, including us!

Her royal loveliness surveys her queendom from the dusty loft space.

She can see everything from there! The seagulls outside, the fridge, the cupboard where the treats live…

Sunbeam dweller.

Spied the little feet and the warming belly.

Then a roll over and a stretch before settling back into the sunbeam.
