Tarts in the oven for feasting day 2. Had an amazing meal yesterday at the delectable home of Annie. She went all out, of course, with full-on nibbles spread followed by the main attraction: the works. GJ did a little chore of replacing some weather stripping and we ate and drank all night! Forgot to photograph my dessert offerings: pumpkin pie and warm ginger pudding cake. Tonight we’re off to another meal with friends. Photos tomorrow…
My favourite chocolate delivery method has always been in hot, milky, rich, drinking form. Through this autumn and winter, we will be sampling as many different purveyors of this heavenly liquid, locally and where we travel, and reporting our findings.
Our first offering: Caffé Fantastico Tré at The Parkside on Humboldt Street in Victoria.
Lovely autumn evening for a walk a few nights ago. Sauntered around the harbour and through the garden at The Empress Hotel before treating ourselves to dessert at Clay Pigeon. Such fun!
I love to see this: the public boulevard being used as vegetable garden. There is one example, very close to downtown, which we admire often. The gardener is usually out tending his creation when we pass. He’s very proud of the quality and flavour of his produce and loves to share the bounty with his neighbours. Proof that we certainly don’t need a lot of space to grow our own food; a little land can go a long way when approached thoughtfully and with passion.
The Fernwood neighbourhood is just on the outskirts of downtown Victoria. I had a work errand to run to the hospital so we decided to make it our walk outing for the day. Fernwood is an eclectic mix of homes with every decade represented from the last 120 years. The small Fernwood Square shopping area includes interesting shops and services as well as a variety of dining experiences from take out Caribbean fare to a pub to a wine bar. The beautiful Belfry Theatre is located here as well. This is a neighbourhood with a real feel of community. We sat out side and shared a stuffed Roti from Stir It Up and watched the evening bike commuters returning home and the sidewalk tables in front of the Cornerstone Cafe full.

A beautifully painted concrete fence with a glimpse of the new addition to Vic High in the background.

Almost all the electric polls are painted from the ground to about 6 feet up. Each is different and they add to the colour of the neighbourhood!
We’ve been missing Cabin 12 since they moved away from the downtown core. Their bennies are amazing. Finally yesterday we made our way to their new location and had an amazing summer-time burger feast. I had the Harl’s Burger, customized with veggie patty and no bacon and GJ had the Poutine Burger. (Find all the burger descriptions on the Dinner menu on their website.) We gobbled them down before I remembered that I should have taken pictures! We also tried their lemonade with a hint of fresh mint and basil. It was amazing. We were so happy to see how busy they were, the new location working out really well. I think the best thing about Cabin 12 is the service. You feel like you’re just hanging out with friends while they bring you delicious food.
A few nights ago we spent the evening with a lovely friend. She laid out the most exquisite assortment of snacks and delicious sangria. The weather was fine so we were able to sit outside on her shady back patio and soak in the summer ambiance.
We had an awesome breakfast on day two in Vancouver at a place we’d never been called Bandidas Taqueria. Amazingly awesome breakfast place with lots of gluten-free options. I had the Huevas Rancheros and GJ had a big bowl of mild vegetarian chili topped with poached eggs. Big plates and bowls of home-made goodness. Then met up with a friend+baby and had delicious coffee at Prado Cafe. Very much fun to try new places! Breakfast can be hard to find in Vancouver so we’re glad to have a new option.
As per our usual Vancouver trip routine, after checking in at our favourite hotel, The Sylvia, we head out to walk the waterfront on English Bay. A quick water taxi hop over to Granville Island and then walk up South Granville investigating the newest shows at art galleries and poking around our favourite shops. I usually try on about 2 dozen items at Anthropologie and GJ helps me choose which ones look best! Then we walk down to Vij’s to line up for the first sitting at 5:30. I think this time we were there at 4:45! Luckily the rain held off mostly and being first in line we were able to stay dry. Our meal, as usual, was superb. I’ve been branching out a little to eat a bit of meat again, especially when we travel. I try to eat only organic ethically raised meat. Mr Vij seems to care greatly about his product and his guests so I feel pretty Ok about eating a bit of meat there, altho there are lots of vegetarian choices. We started with the Samosas. We don’t usually have a starter, but these were amazing: Samosas filled with lamb and beef sauteed in fennel, cloves and sumac. Incredible flavours and the coconut raita-like concoction on the side was delicious. For mains we split the Split pea and spinach mash and spicy millet/bulghar dumplings with vegetables sautéed in pomegranate curry and the Lemon-ghee marinated and grilled organic chicken breast and thigh in tangy tomato curry with roasted garlic and cashews. For dessert I always like the Kheer. We really didn’t need dessert and GJ only helped out with a couple spoonfuls. But it is a delicious, light finish to all the intense flavours of the meal. And the best treat was that Mr. Vij was there that evening. Such a perfect host. Great food, impeccable service, beautiful surroundings: we highly recommend eating here if you are in Vancouver.

The water garden planters outside always contain floating candles and flowers. Really lovely when it’s dark out.
